AKHA raises alarm over high Rate of cultism in public schools, says teachers forcefully initiate students into cult

Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has expressed dismay over the alarming rate of cultism reported among secondary school students in the state.

Addressing the Chairman, State Universal Basic Education Board, SUBEB, Prof. Maria Ikorok, the chairman, House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, Hon. Usoro Akpanusoh described the trend as threatening and worrisome that demands drastic measures.

Expressing fears of a possible closedown of some public schools should the situation is allowed to continue unabated, Hon. Akpanusoh charged Prof. Ikorok and her team to put machineries in motion towards checkmating the vice.

He urged SUBEB to improve on the area of school monitoring by setting up task force teams to help keep the schools free from cultism.

The lawmaker stressed that the scope of responsibility of the taskforce should cover the activities of both students and teachers as some teachers have been alleged to be the ones forcefully initiating students into the various cult groups they belong.

Akpanusoh also emphasized that the board should always conduct integrity check on prospective teachers to be employed to teach in public schools regardless of whoever recommended such a person for the appointment.

Meanwhile, in a related development, Prof. Ikorok while presenting the 2018 Budget proposal of SUBEB had assured on improving the education system in the state.

On the infrastructural challenges facing the education system in the state, she said SUBEB was working towards addressing that based on the funds made available to her and assured of an aggressive renovation and re-roofing of dilapidated public school buildings across the state.

She also hinted that national head count of students and teachers will soon commence so as help generate accurate data for evaluation on specific areas of needs.
